Why do we need a study of culture?
Le tour du Francais- French and Quebec culture lessons

I started learning French in elementary school and loved it immediately. I liked talking in a kind of 'secret' code.
But over time I realized that this language was actually a functionning way of life for millions of people and I wanted to know what their real life was like. Did they eat what I ate? Did they have the same holidays, like the same movies, do their hair the same way as me?

Most courses teaching French have a few paragraphs or pages about culture but nothing around had a complete look at the culture. What was the street slang? What were Paris subways like? What was the secret that kept a French bread crust so crunch? I set out to find out, and for twenty years researched the history, the language, the traditions.

This three volume 2000 some page series is the result.

It is a study, in English and French, of the art, music, museums, schools, barber shops and car races of a people. I cover topics kids want to know about.

The material can be used to supplement any level of French study and any textbook or course. It is an extra - a look at culture.

So go on a trip with me into the areas where French is spoken- and learn about the people, their slang, their holidays, how they eat, their music, their history.

Bienvenue a la culture francaise

When I lived for a few months in Quebec I noticed immediately that the book French I had learned was not the French spoken in the area. I resolved to study the dialects and variations of French and to record them.

This study of culture parallels therefore many Quebec and Parisian terms, expressions and lifestyles.
